After migrating between North America and Europe for the majority of my childhood and teenage years, I've accumulated many close friends in both worlds. Now that I have begun putting down roots in the capital of Finland, blogging is my way of trying to keep in touch with all the wonderful people I've met along the way despite the geographical distances between us.
That is why my posts revolve around pictures and words of what is going on in my life right now. I try to update on the positive things, though life is not always like that. Because of that, writing updates for my friends allows me to appreciate the many good things going on.
Therefore, if you are reading this, you probably know me personally already, but if you have stumbled here by accident, here are some things about me to give you an idea of who I am:
~ I am an incurable bibliophile. I love books with a passion. I love the feel of them. I love the words in them. For me, digital technologies will never be able to provide the sweet satisfaction that printed words can.
~ I live in Helsinki with my wonderful fiance Matias and our little Ellen. Having these two people as constants in my life makes me very happy.
~ In addition to literature, I am most passionate about spiritual and religious issues. I originally majored in religious studies, but switched it to a minor because the career opportunities it provided didn't appeal to me. For some people, understanding math or the sciences or grammatical rules comes naturally. For me, it is theologies and belief systems and spiritual experiences. I occasionally briefly regret abandoning the field of religious studies, but those moments are few and far between.
~ Instead, I did a Masters degree in English with a concentration in literature. But my thesis still centered on spiritual ideologies despite my best attempts to steer clear of that field.
~ Personally, I've found a spiritual home in the Catholic Church which I joined in May of 2008.
~ I tend to be quite fond of different types of conceptual ideals, such as: homesteading, simplicity, mindfulness, self-sufficiency, country living, and the like. I believe that the old adage "less is more" can apply to life as well (though not necessarily to decorating).
Some things that I like are:
~the sea
~nature
~Jugendstil architecture
~Taizé spirituality
~prayer and meditation
~British miniseries
~writing
~reading (naturally)
~and the small luxuries in life
