At Least We're Here

We're here in our new home and have been for the past four nights, though to say that the moving is over would be horribly premature.  There are still some things at the old place that need to be brought over and many boxes to be unpacked and countless things to be put away.  And that's just the very tip of the moving and relocating iceberg.

Moving Day
For me, the first year in a new home is such a contradictory time.  On one hand, it's so nice to have the things that caused you to move in the first place.  For us, those were: more rooms, more nature, and more distance from the Helsinki center.  And the second we officially stepped through the door as residents of this home, those benefits were added to our life.  But I also really dislike the first year since that is about how long it takes for me to start getting things settled within the new home.

Even if someone comes over in a month or two and things seem to be in place and look nice, it takes me much longer to get the home looking and feeling the way I want it too.  It takes longer to make "a place for everything" than it takes to have everything in order.  And that I'm not looking forward to.

But at least we're here and every step taken is a step forward, unlike when you're packing up an old place and know the work results are just temporary.  I am tempted to say that I hope we won't have to move again soon, but the last time I did that, life took some surprising turns and I was moving again less than two years later.  So this time around, it seems safer to say that I hope we move again soon (and to secretly wish we get to stay here at least until Ellen starts school).
